Ultra Micro Arc Oxidation (UMAO) technology is a surface treatment process that is used to create a ceramic-like layer on the surface of metals, such as aluminum, magnesium, and titanium alloys. It is also known as Micro Arc Oxidation (MAO) or Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO).
In UMAO, a high voltage electrical discharge is generated between an anode (metal) and a cathode (electrolyte) in an electrolytic bath. This creates a plasma discharge on the surface of the metal, which causes the formation of an oxide layer through the interaction of the metal with the oxygen ions in the electrolyte. The oxide layer grows through the accumulation of tiny arcs and sparks, which create craters and protrusions on the surface of the metal, forming a highly porous ceramic-like layer with a thickness of up to several hundred microns.
The resulting layer has excellent properties, such as high wear resistance, high hardness, corrosion resistance, thermal and electrical insulation, and biocompatibility. It can also be colored and coated with various materials to improve its appearance and functionality. UMAO is used in a variety of applications, including aerospace, automotive, biomedical, and electronic industries, to improve the performance and durability of metal components.
