They are mainly used in combination with P-containing flame retardants in most applications, but also with metal hydrates and halogenated flame retardants. The main mechanism of action : Cooling of the polymer matrix by endothermic decomposition of melamine; thermal decomposition to produce non-flammable gases such as water, carbon dioxide and ammonia; formation of a carbon layer. The choice of melamine-based flame retardants mainly depends on the processing temperature of the polymer matrix and its effect on hydrolysis sensitivity
